After three consecutive platinum albums and six Top Ten pop hits during the '90s alone, En Vogue had set a standard by which all subsequent female vocal groups were judged. Lineup changes, lawsuits, and infrequent recordings during the ensuing decades did not diminish the impact of their impeccable harmonies. Ellis auditioned later and made the group a quartet. Originally called 4-U , they first appeared on Foster and McElroy's album FM2 as Vogue, and then switched to En Vogue after learning of another group with the same name. Born to Sing, En Vogue's debut album, appeared in and was the source of four major hit singles.

It has been a revolving door for En Vogue since then, with Jones leaving the group — first replaced by Amanda Cole and then by current member Rhona Bennett — and Robinson returning for stints. In fact, all four originals performed together at a benefit last fall.

En Vogue were brought together by producers Denzil Foster and Thomas McElroy after they had an open call for a female vocal group. Dawn Robinson left in to form Lucy Pearl, leaving that group after their first album for a solo career. The three remaining members of En Vogue recorded two less successful albums as a trio, 'EV3' and 'Masterpiece Theatre'. Amanda Cole nee Jones joined the group in , and Maxine Jones left the group soon after to spend more time with her daughter.
Robinson left the group in shortly before the release of their third album EV3 , which reached the US and UK top Jones left the group in , Amanda Cole joined shortly thereafter. However, in , Cole left the group, and Rhona Bennett joined the group during the recording of their album Soul Flower. In , the original members briefly united before disassembling again. In , the original members once again reunited for their "En Vogue: 20th Anniversary".
